WHAT IS A MOON BOOT OR CAM WALKER?
A Controlled Ankle Movement (CAM) Walker is commonly Known as a Moon Boot. It a device designed to immobilise the ankle & foot. Often it is used as a substitute to casting because it’s a more durable, hygienic and removable. The uprights take weight off the foot/ankle and the sole has a rocker to allow easy walking immediately. Clinical evidence also suggests a Moon Boot provides superior healing and mobility.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A MOON BOOT?
- Easily Removed- clean the foot and ankle quickly and easily for superior hygiene and less smell compared to plaster and bandages
- Get rid of Crutches- when professionally fitted, the Moon Boot can reduce stresses and offload weight so you can walk without crutches
- Can Allow movement- in later stages of healing the Moon Boot can be adjusted or removed to allow gradual movement which reduces rehab and Physio
- Durable- a Moon Boot is far more durable than Plaster and does not break down if becomes wet
WHY DO I NEED A MOON BOOT ?
Fractures:
If you have a fracture of the foot or ankle, a Moon Boot will prevent movement and reduce stress applied to the fractured bone during healing. A Moon Boot will take partial weight off the foot and ankle. Some muscular movement is still encouraged within the leg, which can reduce the duration rehabilitation therapy and allow circulation and better healing
Ankle Ligament & Soft tissue Injuries:
If you have a ligament strain / rupture, a Moon Boot will prevent excessive movement of the affected ligament and contributes to stability for more rapid healing.
HOW DO I PUT IT ON A MOON BOOT?
Your Moon Boot needs to be professionally prescribed & fitted to ensure comfort, pain relief & best healing. There are different types of Moon Boots available, and your Complete Feet clinic team will guide you to the best for your injury.
We ensure that the foot is positioned in the optimal position in the Moon Boot of the liner. When fastening the straps, start with the bottom strap and work your way up. Ensure the straps are firm. Padding can also be used under the straps if rubbing or pressure is present on the instep of your foot. Do not disrupt the walker alignment by separating the plastic boot from the inner liner.
YOUR PERSONALISED MOON BOOT TREATMENT PLAN…
Severe fractures may be extremely painful to allow weight on. When the Moon Boot is fitted correctly, the pain and ability to walk is much better. Occasionally more severe fractures will require a set of crutches or a walking stick to help walking. Compression bandage, ice elevation and rest may also be prescribed.
POTENTIAL RISKS
Reduced ankle joint movement, as well as injury, may increase the risk of clot formation in the calf. This is rare, however if you feel a sharp, stabbing pain in your calf muscle, remove the Moon Boot immediately and visit your nearest hospital emergency department. It is also advised to take care walking on slippery or rough / uneven surfaces.
OTHER ADVICE
The different sole height and change in walking pattern from the Moon Boot may potentially create problems at other joints such as the knees, hips or lower back. This may be avoided by wearing a supportive shoe with a similar heel height to the walker on your unaffected side. To maintain hygiene, you may wear a sock beneath the liner. Driving with the walker is not recommended. Do Not remove the liner from the walker, this is set to optimum fit for you. If required you can return for refit/adjustment by appointment.
